“An artist’s job is to be a witness of their time.”
What strikes me most in our time is that we live in an age of astonishing progress
-yet injustice and suffering remain everywhere.
The idea that all people deserve equal rights is, historically, still very new. For most
of human history, inequality was seen as natural, unquestionable, even divinely ordained.
Every step forward -the end of slavery, women’s rights, the idea of universal human dignity,
was fought for by people courageous enough to challenge that order.
This series honours the human rights defenders who continue that struggle today.
They risk their freedom, safety, and sometimes their lives to stand against tyranny,
extremism, racism, corruption, and violence. They fight for education, equality, choice,
safety, love, and the simple right to live freely.
Their courage is overwhelming. Their perseverance is humbling.
To me, they are the heroes of our time.
