Ancient Light
Light has always been here. Ancient light, falling on landscapes that existed
long before anyone was there to see them. Then, that magic moment where humans
discovered how to make fire and handle light.
I am fascinated by light, as a painter, and as a person. As painters, we don't paint people, or things: we paint how the light falls on a face, how the spotlight on an object reveals a detail previously hidden in the shade. As painters, we need to paint the obscurity, for we know light is only visible in the dark -a painting with only light would be a blank canvas.
In this series, I explore light in all its forms: from the drama of sunlight breaking through the clouds, to the warm glow of a thousand illuminated windows pushing back the night. Each painting is built on a smooth, crackled surface -like an ancient fresco,
preserved and rediscovered.
As human beings, the light in our lives comes from joy, kindness, hope.
Look closely at the pieces of this series and you'll find small points of light in unexpected places, like sparks of hope in dark moments.
Without light, there would be nothing -to me, light is Life.
