Francia Márquez
Francia Márquez is an Afro-Colombian human-rights and environmental activist.
Her community in La Toma (descendants of Africans forced into slavery) faced devastation when illegal gold mining poisoned their land and the Suárez River with toxic waste.
As a teenager, Francia began defending her territory. She later studied law to better protect her people from powerful mining interests. She led a group of local women in a march that successfully pressured the Colombian government to halt illegal mining operations in their region.
Her leadership earned her the Goldman Environmental Prize and made her a symbol of resistance for Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities defending their land.
Francia has survived an assassination attempt, and her work continues in a country where hundreds of environmental and social leaders have been killed since 2016.
In 2022 she became Vice President of Colombia
