Nadia Murad
Nadia Murad Basee is a Yazidi human rights activist from northern Iraq.
At 19, her village of Kocho was overrun by ISIS fighters.
More than 600 men (including several members of her family)were executed,
and the younger women and girls were taken as slaves.
Nadia was among the 6,700 Yazidis abducted.
She was beaten, burned, and repeatedly raped before managing to escape three months later. After reaching safety in Germany, she dedicated her life
to seeking justice for her people.
She helped create support networks for survivors and,
together with lawyer Amal Clooney, has worked to bring ISIS commanders
to trial for genocide and sexual violence.
Her courage has been recognized worldwide, including with the Sakharov Prize
and the Nobel Peace Prize.
