Jaha Dukureh
Jaha Dukureh is a Gambian women’s-rights activist and a leading global voice against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
She was subjected to Type III FGM as an infant -the most severe form of the practice, in which the labia and clitoris are removed and the vulva is sewn closed.
At 15, she was sent to New York for an arranged marriage planned years earlier. Despite these circumstances, she went on to earn
a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
In 2013, she founded Safe Hands for Girls, a nonprofit dedicated to ending FGM. Her advocacy contributed to the banning of FGM in The Gambia.
She has since been named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential
people and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
