Anna Politkovskaya
Anna Politkovskaya was a Russian journalist known for her fearless reporting on corruption, human rights abuses, and the war in Chechnya. Early in her career she wrote about social issues and later became one of the most outspoken critics of the post-Sovjet regime and published several award-winning books about life in Russia under Vladimir Putin.
Her work became more dangerous when she started to report about the war in Chechnya, a dirty war as she called it, a conflict between Russian military forces and Chechen fighters, creating hell for the civilians caught between them. Her books and articles exposed the brutality of the conflict and the rise of Ramzan Kadyrov’s rule -a system built on torture, abduction, and fear.
Her investigations made her a target. She was detained and tortured in Chechnya, received repeated death threats, and survived a poisoning attempt. In 2006, she was assassinated in the entrance of her apartment building.
