Loujain Al-Hathloul

Loujain Al-Hathloul is a Saudi women’s rights activist known for challenging the ban on women driving and opposing the male-guardianship system in Saudi Arabia. She also advocated for shelters for survivors of sexual violence and became one of the most influential Arab women on social media.
Her activism led to repeated arrests. In 2018, she was detained along with several other women’s-rights defenders, accused of “undermining state security” but never convicted. According to Amnesty International, she was subjected to torture while in custody, including beatings, waterboarding, and electric shocks. She was released in 2021 but remains under a travel ban.
