Pia Klemp
Pia Klemp is a German animal- and human-rights activist known for rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean. Originally trained as a biologist, she joined the marine conservation group Sea Shepherd, working as a diver and deckhand while earning her captain’s license. During the European migrant crisis,
she commanded rescue ships for NGOs such as Sea-Watch and helped save more than a thousand people from drowning.
Her work drew both international recognition and political pressure. In Italy, she was charged with “assisting illegal immigration” -a charge that carried a possible 20-year prison sentence. An Italian court later dismissed the case after international criticism.
