Nasrin Sotoudeh is an Iranian human-rights lawyer known for defending women, minors, journalists, and activists targeted by Iran’s authorities. Early in her career she worked on cases involving abused children and women’s rights, and later became one of the most outspoken members of Iran’s legal community.
She represented women protesting compulsory hijab laws, as well as political opposition figures after the disputed 2009 elections. For this work, she was arrested on charges of “spreading propaganda” and “acting against national security.” Across multiple convictions, she was sentenced to a total of 38 years in prison and 148 lashes.
