Denise Ho

Denise Ho is a Hong Kong–based singer, actress, and human-rights activist.

After rising to fame as a Cantopop star, she publicly came out as gay at 35 and became an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
In 2014, she joined the Umbrella Movement, standing with pro-democracy protesters as Hong Kong fought against the proposed extradition bill that would allow critics to be sent to mainland China. As one of the most visible cultural figures in the movement, she faced censorship, arrest, and blacklisting by authorities and corporations aligned with Beijing.
Denise later addressed the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, warning of police violence and government repression.
In the years since, Hong Kong’s political freedoms have been dismantled under the National Security Law -a reality she continues to speak out against despite personal risk.
