Daphne Caruana Galizia
Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist, writer, and anti-corruption activist. Her reporting focused on government misconduct, money laundering, nepotism, and the links between Malta’s political elite,
the offshore finance industry, and organized crime.
In 2016, she exposed connections between Panama-registered companies and senior Maltese officials, including the Prime Minister’s inner circle.
For her work, Daphne faced years of intimidation -from threats and arson attacks to constant harassment aimed at silencing her.
On 16 October 2017, she was assassinated by a car bomb near her home.
The investigation has been slow and controversial, but pressure from her family, Maltese citizens, international press freedom groups, and the European Parliament eventually led to multiple arrests, including that of a prominent businessman allegedly involved in the plot,
and to the resignation of Malta’s Prime Minister.
